As snow melts and flowers blossom, families organize their houses, put on new clothes and prepare themselves spiritually as well as physically for a myriad of freshness arriving.
Haft Sin: A Table of Seven Symbols, A Feast for the Soul
Nowruz is cherished for the Haft Sin – a festively decorated table setup of seven items starting with the Persian letter ‘S’ was “Sin.” Each item indicates a hope for the coming year:
Sprouts as Sabzeh are a wish for leftover and reproduction, Apples as Seeb stand for charm, Sumac as Somāq offers sunrise and endurance, Vinegar as Serkeh wishes wellbeing, Garlic as Seer offers wisdom, and Love as dried fruit stands for Senjed.
The Haft Sin is also enhanced with coins, mirrors, holy books, and goldfish. In few words, the spread is a visual prayer for prosperity. As Mariam, a Tehrani Mother notes, “It’s not just a tradition-to us it’s the family’s heartbeat. My children’s Sabzeh arrangement makes life full of hope.”
Chaharshanbe Suri: Dancing with Fire, Burning the Past
Nowruz is also celebrated by exploring Chaharshanbe Suri – the Tuesday preceding holiday is one filled with excitement, fires, and lively gatherings. Fires are built by most citizens, who hop over it shouting ‘Give me your glow, take my pallor,’ as fireworks illuminate the air, and the sounds of Ajil fills public spaces.
