The news of the action-thriller film Dhurandhar starring Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan being produced by the Bollywood had sent the fans on a wild frenzy. However, then immediately one started getting the mutterings of–“Wait, I forget- how old are they?”– and suddenly excitement was rippled with argument.
The Age Difference that had everybody in a Riot
The 38-year-old hyperactive actor Ranveer Singh and 28-year-old endearing actress Sara Ali Khan are reported to be the love interest in the movie. That is 10 years of age gap, and frankly speaking, in Bollywood that is not news. However, this time the question arising in minds of the people is why is this happening?
With one simple scroll on Reddit or Twitter, it is evident that there are divided opinions. Other fans do not mind -“It does not matter as long as there is chemistry.” Others are now rolling their eyes 205. –Another older hero and a younger heroine. Groundbreaking.” One of the users mocked, saying, “Given with this pace, we may find a 60 year old hero courtship a college girl.” Ouch.
Whats the Director Saying?
Uri: The Surgical Strike is directed by Aditya Dhar, the man who is not concerned about the criticism. During a recent chat he opined, Ranveer and Sara are just right in these roles. Age is age, Until the story requires.”
Fair point. However, in real life, Bollywood is fond of putting older actors with women half as young and surprising people that it is normal. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna anyone? The 30-year age difference between Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji caused quite a few eyebrows to be raised at the time and the difference in age continues to come up in present times.
Is That so Big?
This is the point, nobody raises his/her eyebrows when a 50-year old action hero like George Clooney dates a younger actress. However, in Bollywood, it is not like that. Perhaps it is in part due to how common it is and this makes it sound slothful.
The fans of Sara Ali Khan are hoping that her character is not only the young love interest. She has shown it in such film work as Atrangi Re in which she acted out complicated characters. People may not even speak of the age gap when Dhurandhar gives her something meaty.
the Bigger Question: Do we care?
Films are an affair of narration in the end of the rope. And when the characters portrayed by Ranveer and Sara would make sense together, then that would be great. Or is it just another outing of “a hero has to have a young, glamorous leading girl,” well, then perhaps it is time to have a cell change.
Bollywood is changing. Viewers require new stories, healthy relations, and representation equality. Dhurandhar might employ the same playbook or he might make everyone surprised.
