The latest addition to Netflix’s catalog is Dhoom Dhaam, featuring Yami Gautam and Pratik Gandhi, which was released on the 14th of Febuary 2025. Like most major films, Dhoom Dheem set its genre as a amalgamation of romance, action and comedy. The question is do they deliver on their promise? The film was directed by Rishab Seth and produced by Aditya Dhar and as is the case with blends of genres, the film struggles with its originality and does resort to cliched plot devices. We’ll explain why the movie did not live up to the excepectations of the audience that had around the Valentine’s Day holiday.
A Disasterous Honeymoon: A Take on the Plot From The Tables’ Brief
The film tells the story of an out-of-sync couple from an arranged marriage named Veer (Yami Gautam), and Koyal (Pratik Gandhi). Right when their wedding seemed over, two muggers break into their hotel with the intention of terrorising the newly wed while demanding for Charlie’s location. A chase envelops Mumbai filled with cars being destroyed, bullets getting flying, and a lot of shouting.
While the base of the plot is somewhat captivating, it is poorly executed throughout the film. The film has too many narratives, including romance, comedy, and action, which hinders the individual components and makes the film incoherent. There is no surprise with the identity of “Charlie” and it is dissatisfaction with dry twist of plot 15.
While Yami did not flutter in her appearences and kept up her reputation, Pratik seemed to falter on the big screen and did not perform his Koyal duties
The change from a shy bride to a fearless, foul-mouthed lady is the best part of the film. Her character’s feminist monologue is quite powerful but seems inaccurate whilst in a chase that could lead to her death 710.
Pratik Gandhi: Veer is a spineless, timid, stickler for rules that works as a veterinarian and is terrified of almost everything. The actor clearly has brilliant comedic timing, but the character’s nonstop clumsiness becomes annoying sooner than later. The audience can tell that the film’s attempts to endear him to viewers fall flat 59.
The Good: Fun Filled Moments
Action Sequences: The car chases and the fighting are gifted with creativity and well executed which makes the tiresome plot more bearable 9.
Supporting Cast: Even with limited exposure, Eijaz Khan and Mukul Chadda’s performances are a breath of fresh air and increase viewer interest in the film 68.
The Bad: Areas of Improvement
Above Average Challenges: The mystery of “Charlie” is revealed too early and it dilutes film suspense. Every twist is a cringefest, and the climax is embarrassing for everyone involved. 15
Weak Shifts: The film has no sure footing with its genres. One second it feels like a family friendly comedy and the next it comments on gender issues. This creates a very discomforting experience 710.
Writing Deficiencies: The dialogue included in this film is not worth the burden of uttering them and could give you secondhand embarrassment.
You can’t help but laugh from the absurdity of “Keep your core strong, nothing will happen!” one liner in a fight scene. 1
The Bad:
Feminism: It is powerful when Koyal is given an opportunity to speak about the struggles of women on her dare, however, it comes off as forced within the overall scope of the narrative. This film does not seem to add any work to these issues which makes them checkmarks to complete 78.
Koyal posits that love can develop between strangers is sited as the “problems” the film “critique.” The critique geared towards arranged marriages is seeks to challenge norms but only perpetuates them instead. Koyal and Veer seem to possess a very surface level emotional connection in the film and their subsequent relationship and understanding of each other is profoundly lacking. 59.
Rating: Stream It or Skip It?
Dhoom Dhaam is a poster child for movies that could have been great, but squandered opportunities. There are several moments, especially with Yami Gautam’s performance and some of the action scenes, where you fnd yourself gripped. It does not help that the movie suffers from poor writing and a poorly constructed story. If you are picking a film for Valentine’s Day, this one is bound to work, but it is not going to be for the right reasons. It is likely to be used as a backdrop rom-com such as Jab We Met Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
Verdict: 2.5/5
